4 SIMPLE WAYS YOU CAN CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

There are so many little ways YOU can make a difference to your environmental impact every day. When it comes to living an eco-friendly lifestyle, no actions are too small. Even the simplest habits can make a world of difference if practised often. Here is a list of four ways you can care for the environment and reduce that eco-footprint.

1. Try out some vegetarian dishes

Meat is extremely taxing on the environment; each animal you consume requires vast amounts of land, fuel and water to reach your dinner plate. Simply mixing up your diet with some more vegetarian and vegan dishes will not only help the planet, but can save you some cash along the way. Try googling some vegetarian dishes this week and having a go at something new, or better yet, plant a veggie garden in the back yard and enjoy some true ‘farm to table’ homemade salads!

2. Reusable coffee cups are your friend!

Is the thought of that delicious latte what gets you out of bed in the morning? You’re not alone! According to Roy Morgan Research the average Australian adult drinks about 9.2 cups of coffee per week. Unfortunately, is it estimated Australians use 1 billion disposable coffee cups each year. That’s approximately 2,700,000 paper coffee cups thrown out each day! You may not think your coffee habit will have an impact, but every little cup counts. Try getting into the habit of bringing a reusable coffee cup out with you to reduce your waste. Hot tip – a lot of cafes are now offering discounts if you bring your own cup!

3. Hit the bike path

Save money, get fit and reduce your environmental impact all at once? It sounds too good to be true! Well in fact, simply incorporating bike riding into your life will make all this possible. Cycling significantly reduces your eco-footprint and is a fun outdoor activity to get the blood pumping. It may not always be viable to bike ride everywhere, but start by incorporating small rides on the weekends and run your errands on 2 wheels instead of 4.

 4. Reduce your food waste

Start by planning your grocery runs. Most of us know not to hit the supermarket when you’re ravenously hungry (three boxes of shapes anyone?!) but going in with a list can help prevent you from making random decisions which result in you wasting the food you don’t eat. Plan your meals ahead of time and keep a tab on items that inevitably end up expiring so you can better plan the frequency you purchase it and the quantity you actually need. Reducing your food waste will have a large impact on the environment and save you cash along the way.
